Glass Replacement in Wood Frame
Lets first discuss the glass replacement in wood frame.
The number one step is to remove the glass shards. There are two methods for removing the glass shards from the window. You can remove the glass shards when sash is still in the frame or after removing the frame and work on a table. It depends on the situation, but it is easy to work on the table. You can tap the glass with hammer if it’s not easily pulling out. You can also apply a grid of duck tape to the pane. Heat gun can be used and scraper of chisel to remove all the putty and all the points.
The step number two is to remove all the putty and metal glazing points. Here can be need of pull tape scraper or an old chisel. You can also use a hammer to tap gently. Keep in mind that the grooves where the new window will go should be smooth. The heat gun can help you in making the old putty soften.
Prepping frame is the third step in glass replacement. Wipe the frame with a slightly damp rag, also wire-brush the frame and vacuum it. After wiping, apply a coat of linseed oil to the rabbet, this will help the putty to stick securely.
The step number four is to measure the pane. You should carefully measure the height and width of the opening in at least two places. You should keep the piece of glass 1/8 inch shorter in each direction. Test-fit the pane before proceeding.
Now move toward the step number 5 and apply the putty. Roll a ball of putty into a thin rope. Then press it into the corner of the rabbet. Now use a putty knife to press the glazing compound firmly into the place, making a thin bed of putty for the glass to rest against.
Now check the glass by gently pressing the glass into the putty bed, check that it lies flat against the rabbet in all places. Every 7 inches or so press a glazing point into the wood; shove only gently in opposite to the glass as you go.
Spin a cord of putty about 3/4 inch thick. Aim for a fairly constant diameter, but it need not be ideal. Now apply the putty to the glass. Press the rope of putty against the glass and the frame. Use your thumb for pressing the putty. Use a rag to sporadically apply linseed oil to a glazier’s knife or putty knife, press over again by means of swiping motions every inch or two.
Now smooth the putty. Functioning in the same way and holding the knife at the accurate angle so the putty will not be able to be seen inside, push steadfastly and draw the knife along the line to even the putty.
Now give the finishing touches. If the resultant putty has a chain of slight ridges, smooth them by calmly wiping with your finger, working in the opposite direction.
If a window pane is secured with parts of wood molding, pry the molding out with a small horizontal pry bar. Scratch away any previous caulk, test the fit, and apply fresh silicone caulk. Push the pane into the caulk. When restoring the wood molding, take care to position the nails so they do not stroke the glass. Use again the old nail holes, perchance driving somewhat larger nails. Make use of a scrap of plywood to protect the pane.
Replacement of Glass in a Vinyl Frame
Now lets learn the procedure of replacement of glass in a Vinyl Frame. The step number one is to remove the vinyl stop. For this you can use a putty knife or small flat pry bar. You should work very carefully to keep the stop safe otherwise it can break or can crack. Remove the old window glass and order a new piece to fit.
Now replace the sealing tape and sealant. You can check that the new pane will fit or not. After scraping off the old sealing tape clean the surface with paint thinner. Cut the pieces of the tape so that it can fit precisely. Press the pieces of sealing tape into place on the rabbet.
Now step of placing the glass has come. So, carefully set the pane in the place. If once it is set into the tape, then you cannot adjust its position. To secure the glass you should press the vinyl stop back into the frame.
If you want to install the rubber gasket then slip the gasket onto the edges of the glass, pressing firmly so the gasket is tight at all points. Then set the pane into the frame. Partially disassemble the frame first, it will be good.
Forms of Glazing for Thermal Panes
The main types of glazing for thermal panes are wood molding, sealing tape and rubber gasket.
You cannot cut the double-glazed window panes yourself. They must be produced by a professional. Although they are secured in a diversity of ways. You can use the three methods which are most common.
