Actually, two schools of thoughts belong to the concept of using the mirrors in a dance class. Most of the people say that having mirrors in the dance class is effective. While the rest claims that it is a curse. The two schools of thoughts in having a mirror in dance class have their own perceptions which are true in their respects. The problem is not with the use of the mirrors in the dance studio, but it is actually that how we use the dance mirrors. Here we are going to discuss both cases i:e dance studio with mirror and dance studio without mirrors.
Dance Studio with Mirrors
Lets first discuss the dance studios which have the mirror. The mirrors have the art of mesmerizing the place without any extra cost. This is the one point that mostly the dance studios have the mirrors. Secondly mirrors reflect the light in result the place looks bigger than its actual vicinity.
Mirrors For Dancers
We can find many positive aspects in using a mirror in the dance training. The mirrors provide the instantaneous visual feedback to the dancers. They can evaluate the height and shape of their movement and can correct their placement. Dance Mirrors also help the dancers in the assessment of the line of their bodies.

Mirrors For Teachers
Like the dancers mirrors also provide some benefits to the teachers. They use the mirrors as an instructional tool. Teachers can also easily situate themselves to view the students at a glance. However, very little research has been conducted on this.
Negative Aspects of Mirrors in Dance Studio
The dance studios without the mirrors do not create an appealing look. The one negative aspect, which the researchers have found is that the students pay much heed on their reflection than actually learning the dance. This self-consciousness may over power the dancer’s own internalized sense of his body as it moves through space. So, we can say that having mirrors in a dance class can be both a blessing and a curse. As music and dance go side by side here I’m sharing a research based on adagio phrase learing. According to some researchers the beginning ballet students who learned and practiced an adagio phrase (an instruction on a piece of sheet music, directing the musician to play slowly) without the mirror developed stronger technical skills in their presentation of the phrase than a analogous group of students who learned and practiced the same adagio phrase using a mirror.
It was also found in the research that the use of the mirror for dancers with less than ten years of dance training may be distracting and delay the learning process.
Use Mirrors Effectively in Dance Class
The key factor is that one should know when and how to use the mirrors correctly to get the most out of it and when to ignore it. Here is the saying of a professional show dancer TCRG at the Ashurst Academy of Irish Dance. “You are not provided a mirror for yourself at a “feis”so it is a good idea to know how to dance with one and also dance without one.” Obviously, when one have to perform in front of audience he will not be provided with a mirror. So a professional dancer must know how to dance without the mirror. This can only be possible if he is not too much dependant on the mirror. if you want to become a good dancer then you must feel what the dance should be like and not always see it. The most crucial point is to be able to see what the dance should do. When one constantly watches himself, then it means he is relying on the visual cues rather than knowing where his body is. He will also be unaware of that how it feels to perform a movement using his inbuilt sensors.
According to a Dance Teacher
A dance teacher whom I have discussed earlier, I mean Ashurst says, “When I demonstrate something for a student, I like them to study what I’m doing prior to watching themselves copy it.” So it is cleared that the dance teacher will always want to teach his students the best dance techniques which his students can only learn if they will give 100% attention to their teachers’ performance.
“Sometimes, very young students have a hard time taking their eyes away from the mirror when they dance, so close attention is needed by the teacher to make sure the dancers are looking at the right part of their body and not checking out their face or hair.” Therefore we can say that the mirror is admirable for helping to learn dance routine commonly known as choreography. So one can see things from all angles, but it should be an extra tool for learning dance and one should not rely on mirror as the sole learning device.
Points to consider while using a mirror in Dance Class
One should remember these points if he is going to use the mirror while learning the dance. He should use the mirror to learn a step by watching his teacher or friend or from the video if he is learning from a video tutorial.
One should use a mirror to make sure his form is correct during drills and stretches.
One should watch himself in short bursts to correct his posture or turnout.
Ceili dancing is an excellent example of learning your spacing by feel and movement rather than by sight in a mirror. So the use of a mirror can be constructive when one is learning a choreography. It is also good to use while establishing spacing, particularly for movements where the entire team is facing the mirror. You should not forget that by using a mirror all the time there is the risk of reliance. Keep in mind, there are no mirrors on stage.
If you are a dancer or a dance teacher then you are most welcome to share your experiences of using a mirror in dance class. If you are not a professional then you are also welcome to share your views about the pros and cons of using the mirrors in a dance class.
